The third edition of the Young3 camp took place in Oakland, California at Boys and Girls Club of Oakland. The turnout was very impressive as 150 kids showed up to the clinic with half of them participating in the 3 on 3 tournament. We saw several extremely competitive games in the 3 on 3 tourney and crowned three new Young3 champions.
Kids were treated to a talk by Ice Cube in which he spoke about the great things that being active does for you. In addition Cube pushed the narrative of 3 on 3 basketball and the fact that it’s a great professional option later in life. An abundance of kids took pictures with Ice Cube and were thrilled to have him sign their Young3 jerseys. Commissioner of the Big3, Clyde Drexler also showed up to the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland today and was seen interacting with the kids and even acting as a referee during games. Former Warriors legend, Rick Barry was also in attendance.
All participants in the clinic and tournament were rewarded with tickets to the Big3 games on Friday night. Those who wear their Young3 gear to the game will get great court level seats and I’m sure will be visible on TV for their friends and family to see. This should be an unforgettable experience for these children and it’s all thanks to the Young3 and Big3. The President and CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Oakland, Calvester R. Stanley stated, “We sincerely appreciate Young3 having our organization’s mission on its radar to help our student-members enhance their skill sets... BIG3 too.”
Seeing how affected these kids were, I’m positive that one day these young men and women will want to give back to their own communities and make an impact just like Jerome Williams, Desmon Farmer, Erin Thorn and James “Hollywood” Robinson among others have. Calvester R. Stanley also said, “The Young3 Basketball Clinic was a horizon-broadening experience that our kids won’t soon forget. The encouragement from Ice Cube, JYD, and Clyde The Glide will generate many returns as our young people continue to learn and grow.” Next week The Young3 heads to Detroit, looking to continue to spread their message and inspire more young boys and girls.
